Lina Inverse
Year: 1999
Age: 14

Except for when I dressed up as Sindel from Mortal Kombat when I was 10 and Sailor Moon when I was 11, Lina Inverse is my official first cosplay. See, the thing is that I liked Slayers. It was funny. However, Lina Inverse was an annoying character, and I didn't really like her. Why do the costume then? Because my boyfriend at the time (see the next picture) talked me into it to go along with his costume. However, he ended up spending a good amount of time with another one of our friends who also happened to dress up as Lina Inverse (to add insult to injury, we both had a thing for this girl... Anna, not Lina). Afterwards, I vowed to never do a stupid costume again for someone else... unless they were a cute girl.

Mildly ungrateful boyfriend (cute picture, though)

Gally
Year: 1999
Age: 14

Gunnm (which is a Japanese abreviation for Gun Dream) is the animated 2 part OAV tale of what later became Battle Angel Alita, which will continue to be my favorite manga for the rest of eternity. Alita is probably also my favorite character, even as Gally, which is what she was originally dubbed in the show (and very briefly referred to later in the manga as well). Yukito Kishiro is brilliant, hands down. Even James Cameron is a fan, who bought the rights to do a live action movie of the series. It should be noted that his television series, Dark Angel, was very bluntly inspired by the series Battle Angel as well (not always a bad thing, Cam. Call me if you need an actress. I'm cute and cheap.)

Fetish Kitty
Year: 1999
Age: 14

This was an original concept costume, with a very sexy pair of pants which were some sort of stretchy awesomeness that I've never been able to find another pair of. I carried around a mallet, which I purchased for under a dollar, and even had a tail. I didn't really say much while wearing this costume to keep up a menacing demeanor. People just kept asking me to punish them, to which I would just sort of scowl, and then turn around and walk away (the smart thing that most mothers should teach their daughters to do at that age).

This was drawn by one of my best friends at the time, Kelly Lambert. I feel bad because I never got a chance to properly thank her for the artwork in which she did for me. She was (and surely still is) a very talented artist who was always blessed with inspiration.

Bondage Fairy
Year: 2000
Age: 14

The Bondage Fairies was a very popular hentai comic which sparked many of my friends (several of them very popular) to do fairy costumes from the series. Well, I decided to sort of improvise my own from the comics I had collected. It was popular, and certainly fun to wear. Plus, there were mini pad-locks on my skirt.

Lolita Bunny
Year: 2000
Age: 14

By far, this was the most controversial costume in which I ever wore. Yes, I was only 14. Yes, that is Victoria Secret underwear covered in fur. No, I'm still not positive what possessed me to do such a thing. It certainly was from lack of parenting, that's for sure. I was at that age in which I was going to do whatever the hell I felt like, no matter what anyone said. My mother simply tried to support my strange behavior to the best of her abilities, hoping it was just a phase. And she was right. I'm far too self-conscious these days to ever go out in something like that, period.

However, the attention was pretty sweet.

Commentary artwork, created directly after my Lolita Bunny stint, by the talented EK Weaver. She used to have this strong disdain for me, and I couldn't blame her one bit. She is quite an incredible girl, though (she's a libra like me, and that automatically makes her superior). Do check out her work at Big Big Truck.

This is yet again another piece by the fabulous Kelly Labmbert.

Natalia Kassle
Year: 2000
Age: 14

I was talked into joining a Danger Girl group by the lovely Heather Martin and Lindze Merrit. My reluctance came because I feared I wasn't busty enough by far. But they ensured me that I was perfect for the part, to which I was sucked in instantly. Of course, I still felt very out of place at the time as a young teenager next to these two beautiful women.

Yes, those are purple vinyl pants and a fishnet shirt.

Dark Phoenix
Year: 2000
Age: 14

I grew up, from the age of 6, a die hard X-men fan. I started with the comic books, and preferred those over the cartoons (though I never missed them, of course.) I saw all 3 movies on opening day, but I never purchased any of them on DVD because they made me cry from the sheer commercialism that destroyed what had always been the perfect image of the Marvel Universe in my mind. Wolverine, whom I still declare that I shall marry one day, was a big pussy. And that made me sad... anyway... no more... Now, about the costume...

Jean was never my favorite character. In fact, she kind of annoyed me. However, the Dark Phoenix rocked every pair of boxers that ever existed. This chick was even a formidable challenge for the legendary White Queen, and fit in quite well with the darkness which was the Hellfire Club. She was awesome, quite simply put. She had the darkest heart ever possessed by a female Marvel character... well, basically because she herself was possessed. But that doesn't matter. You need to give respect where it's due.

Satan-chan
Year: 2000
Age: 14

"Chan", in case you haven't been informed yet, is a suffix which the Japanese attach to names which denotes endearment. It's usually reserved for young females or small children. So what would be cuter than a Satan-chan?

Nothing apparently, as a swarm of photographers corned me for a solid 20 minutes. I couldn't move three feet without being stopped by admirers. It was positively the simplest costume in which I've ever created, the character was an original concept, and yet it won so much attention.
Oh yes... I was running game that night.

Miyuki-chan PJs
Year: 2000
Age: 14

We did a group for Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, a very ecchi OAV from Clamp. It was very cute, indeed. I can be seen down in front in my pink PJs. I like simplicity and comfort above all things. Pain may be fashionable, but I'm pure sloth.

Porno Dancer
Year: 2000
Age: 14

If you watch episode 8 you will see this very minor character appear about halfway through. Although it takes the form of a female in the wired, the voice is male. So it could be considered a he or a she. I only did the costume because Yoshitoshi ABe, who was the character designer for the series, was going to be at Otakon and I didn't want to be dressed like anyone else there. Besides, if he recognized me, that's all that mattered.

And he did.

Yuri Sakazaki
Year: 2000
Age: 15

While Yuri wasn't my favorite King of Fighters character, she was one that was not cosplayed as very often... at least, not in America. There were hundreds of Japanese girls dressing up as Yuri every year. However, there was a shortage over here, and so I decided to do something about it.

Not only did I do Yuri, but I also did her alternate colors (red instead of blue.) I loved the outcome. Plus, red converse are sexy.

Satanic Cheerleader
Year: 2000
Age: 15

This was my Halloween costume, inspired by the movie Bring It On. My mother helped me make it, and I wore it to a Genitoturers show.

Lum
Year: 2001
Age: 15

Lum is my favorite character of all time. She's beautiful (for an alien), cute, bubbly and dedicated to her man. Oh yes... and she's extremely rageful when it comes to jealousy. And she has a fan club.

I can't think of a better comparison to Bunny.

I was quite upset with myself for not fluffing my hair out more that day (it was partially due to having showered shortly before hand, and it was still drying.) One thing is for sure... I'm never dying my hair turquoise. Ever. Again.

Lolita Bunny 2k1
Year: 2001
Age: 15

This was a new spin on an old classic (sort of.) I was very much into the Cyber Punk/Goth scene at the time (keep in mind that there was turquoise hair underneath that pink wig) so a purple rubber dress seemed only natural.

The legendary pictures of this costume took on a whole life of their own years later.

Kelly's take on Lolita, which also became the image used for the Bunny-con badges.

Alita
Year: 2002
Age: 16

Think of this as the manga version of Gally... only a bit more mature. Hence the "blood" on the face. Probably my favorite costume that I have ever worn. It will never be retired. Especially since I spent $200 on that wig.

Oh right... and I spray painted my hands with primer to make them look mechanical. Bunny's real bright sometimes.

Kelly Cop
Year: 2002
Age: 16

I finished my Bust a Move costumes two years after everyone else did. Oh well, it just made mine even more special. I enjoyed wearing both of them, and memorized all the dances. Yes, I'm a dork.

Kelly Baby
Year: 2002
Age: 16

Same character as the last, only a little bit weirder... The whole story behind her character is that she was an office lady by day who liked to dress up and go to fetish clubs at night.

Who would have been better to do this costume? Really now?

Lenore
Year: 2002
Age: 17

Roman Dirge is the man, and Lenore is awesome. There's not too much more to say about that... other than I'm one of the original people without a life who posted daily on the Spookyland Message Board. It was strange, yet fun when several of those people found me years later on MySpace.

Death
Year: 2003
Age: 18

This was the last Halloween costume that I ever wore before moving out of my parents home. Ah, fond memories. I had only been working for Waldenbooks for about a month (that's also about how long I had been a legal adult as well). That night my mother, my friend Cindy and I all went to a sex club. Yes, a SEX CLUB. Not a FETISH CLUB where people get spanked, but a SEX CLUB where you need to fill out a form to become a member to gain entrance. Once inside, you watch (and may participate if you like) people having sex.

That was a memorable Halloween.

PS - if you don't know where this character is from, you're probably too young to be using the internet unsupervised.

Seifuku
Year: 2005
Age: 20

This official Japanese school girl uniform had been sitting in my closet unworn for a couple of years (mind you that I hemmed the skirt a bit.) I decided to let it shine on day at an impromptu 3 hour visit to Megacon, which is one of the VERY FEW reputable conventions in Florida.

As of my writing this at the moment, it's the last official cosplay in which I have worn to date. Hopefully... maybe... this statement will change.
