Fyfe Dangerfield

Official Website: http://fischerspooner.com/
Where to Buy His Music: Amazon & iTunes
Origin: Birmingham, England
Fyfe is the frontman for an interesting little band called Guillemots, but I tend to prefer him on his own. His solo career got a kick-start when a department store chain in Great Britain featured his cover of She's Always A Woman in one of their commercials. I like his new style, as it is laid back pop that borrows heavily from the 70s.
Fyfe is a bit goofy looking, but with an attractiveness about him. He is sort of like what happens when two attractive people have an offset looking child. Now that I think of it, he does appear to be a spawn of Jay Kay and Jamie Cullum.
The video that I am posting here is for a single that I enjoy, but the iLike service only plays a 30 second sample of the song. I do not care for the video itself, but I have no other clever way of giving you the full song without being sued. I would hate to think that this guy is so vain that it was his idea to be on camera for 99% of his own video, especially with the subject matter being a woman. At least give us a decent looking chick to look at for a moment, for heavens sake!

Reverie Sound Review

Official Website: http://reveriesoundrevue.net/
Where to Buy Their Music: Amazon & iTunes
Origin: Canada (various cities)
My original contact with the Reverie Sound Review was with the single One Marathon, which became a song that still tugs at my heart strings to this day. It is a very simple sounding tune as far as indie pop music goes, but complexity does not always make for better music. One Marathon was part of a six song EP released in 2003. The band didn't necessarily break up after that, but they basically went on their seperate artistic paths due to the inconvenience of living long distances away from each other all over Canada. In the meantime, they did gather long enough to complete an actual full length album (also known as an LP for you youngsters, which stands for "long play"), FINALLY released in.... wait for it.... 2009!
Will they tour? Probably not. Will they make more music together in the future? I damn sure hope so.

Electroclash is not my favorite of genres, but it always manages to grow on me after some time. The same applies to this marvelous little group. While the two main members are Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner (hence the name), the group actually consists of a few more members who will sing and play various instruments... as well as dancers, who carry out choreographed performances. I think this is one of those rare electronic groups that would actually be fun to see live. Their first album was a little hard for me to swallow, but I am digging their new stuff that is very reminiscent of the Pet Shop Boys. I believe that they are just bound to get better with age.

The Airborne Toxic Event

Official Website:http://www.theairbornetoxicevent.com/
Where to Buy Their Music: Amazon & iTunes
Origin: Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California
While I do enjoy poking fun at the name of this band, they do have a legitimate source behind their name (taken from a book called White Noise, which came out the year I was born.) Their music is very emotional, but I wouldn't call it "emo" exactly. It is mature and would probably appeal to Morrisy or Chris Isaak. Their sound is mature without being melodramatic or pretentious, and I really enjoy the direction in which the band is heading.

Pacha Massive

Where to Buy Their Music: Amazon & iTunes
Origin: The Bronx, New York
The first time I heard Pacha Massive was during one of my horrific morning commutes by car when I was still doing the hour trip each way to Miami (no mas!). One of my favorite DJs at WVUM was playing a song of theirs on her morning commute show, and I instantly gravitated towards them. They are fun, soulful, laid back and a real breath of fresh air. The best way for me to describe Pacha Massive is Latin-Fusion-Electronic-Pop. However, I will let you decide for yourself.

Janelle Monáe

Official Website: http://www.jmonae.com/
Where to Buy Her Music: The store on her website is best.
Origin: Kansas City, Missouri
My super adorable friend, Avina, introduced me to this artist a couple of months ago, and I am so glad she did.
I have to admit that while I am a huge Outkast fan, I did not see Idlewild (have the CD, but never saw the movie) or otherwise I would have known of Janelle sooner. I love the fact that she's from Kansas City, which is close to Belton where my Grandmother is at. Goes to show that great music doesn't just come out of St. Louis.
Janelle's songs are excellent and she has a superior vocal range. Plus, the girl can DANCE! Hot damn!
She is a brilliant girl, with a real passion for life, music and charity. Also, I love how she themes her current albums in Asimov-esque worlds.

Veronica Maggio

Official Website: http://www.veronicamaggio.com/
Where to Buy Her Music: Amazon and her website... if you understand Swedish...
Origin: Sweden
The first time I ever heard Veronica's music was when I watched a music video featured on the bicycle blog Copenhagen Cycle Chic, and within 30 seconds I was in love. Not only because she looks gorgeous while pushing pedals, but because the song is legitimately wonderful. So far she only has 2 albums and her popularity is kind of restricted to a certain area of Europe (mostly Sweden/Norway/Denmark). Her first album is very sex kittenish and her second is a little more retro, but both are really amazing. The songs I have featured below from iLike are only from her first album because that is all they have *evil stare* but the music video is from her second album, and it is the very one in which I fell in love with. I hope she continues to tour and have fabulous success so I may be able to see her perform in the flesh some day.
On a siiiiiiiide note..... something that sort of peeves me is that her albums are extremely difficult to find, and while iTunes does have her 2006 album, they do NOT have her newer 2008 album! I mean, seriously... I'm assuming there is a reason, but it can't be a very legitimate one. While I despise purchasing mp3s because you're getting ripped off, when I first heard her music and attempted to buy the new album, I couldn't find it for sale online, and couldn't even pay to download it. In the meantime, I've found it on Amazon, but iTunes failed miserably. Just saying.

People Under The Stairs
Official Website: http://www.putsonline.co.uk/
Where to Buy Their Music: Amazon & iTunes
Origin: Los Angeles, CA
This infectious hip hop duo, comprised of Thes One (the dude on the phone, shown above) and Double K, are makers of a certain brand of hip hop from a bygone era. Even with the occasional infusion of dance beats, People Under The Stairs (or PUTS as they are sometimes referred to) have a very funky, down to earth flavor of hip hop that is hard to not enjoy. Currently 9 albums deep, I really respect the fact that they still manage to keep things fresh and interesting without completely abandoning their style. It is so easy these days for groups to jump on bandwagons if that's what the masses seem to want at the moment just so they can break out of that underground scene and make the big time. I understand that it is incredibly difficult to keep your musical integrity in this dog eat dog industry, but PUTS has done a fabulous job. I have a feeling that even if they do blow up big eventually, they will continue to make awesome beats for us.

This is a trio of girls from Japan that create some of the most kick ass, whimsicle electronica you will ever find. Their songs are catchy and infectious, and I hope they continue to make such wonderful music.

Little Boots

Official Website: http://www.littlebootsmusic.co.uk/
Where to Buy Her Music: Amazon or iTunes
Origin: Lancashire, England
When I first saw Little Boots, I was tickled silly because that was one of the many nicknames I had for my black pomeranian (the way she was unfortunately shaved makes her appear to be wearing boots.... but I digress.) I really am truly in love with this girl. She is talented and beautiful, regardless of what my male counterparts may say about her. She may not have that ideal look of beauty that perpetuates male masturbation, but I find her looks quite fascinating and alluring. Regardless, if you have any inclination towards pop and or dance music at all, you need to check her out. Below are two things; her song Remedy, hosted by iLike.com as well a live, acoustic performance video of her song Meddle. Please be sure to check them both out.

Electric Six

Official Website: http://www.electricsix.com
Where to Buy Their Music: Amazon or iTunes
Origin: Detroit, Michigan
Electric Six has to be hands down the best band I have ever seen a live performance of. In fact, I've seen them twice... so far... in the meantime, that number may have increased! Yes, this is very formula rock and roll, but that's why it's so gosh darn good! Plus, you have entertaining lyrics (though not quite as over the top as the Bloodhound Gang) that doubles as good conversational dialog. Well, at least for me it does. These are six very talented musicians who have several albums under their belts, and they just seem to keep getting better with age. Thank you, Detroit!
By the way.... after you watch this video for their most famous tune "Danger! High Voltage", Google yourself some "Gay Bar"... and try not to grin like an idiot while you watch Honest Abe grind the pole, will ya?
